Something strange in your neighborhood? Probably this guy.

This is probably the world’s coolest music instrument- the Tesla Coil. The sound is coming entirely from the giant sparks this thing makes.

Underwater BASE jumping

Check out world record holder Guillaume Nery’s free dive at Dean’s Blue Hole- an awesome dive with awesome film production. It’s amazing what humans are capable of if you just set set a goal and work towards it.

Random thought of the day

This is an old story and I’m not sure where I first heard it, maybe one of those cheesy motivational posters, but for some reason it popped into my mind this morning so I thought I would share.

An old man was walking down the beach one morning when he came across a boy throwing something into the water. He asked the boy what he was doing and the boy said, “I’m throwing these starfish back into the sea. The sun is coming up and the tide is going out, and if I don’t throw them back they will die.” The old man looked at him and said, “Well that’s nice, but this beach stretches for miles. There are thousands of starfish and you’re just one person. There are too many starfish for you to make a difference before the tide goes out.” Without saying anything the boy bends down and picks up another starfish and throws it back into the water. Then he turns back to the old man and says, “I made a difference to that one.”

Beach bum/hippy thoughts on financial success

Today someone asked the question “what does financial success mean?” 10 years ago I probably would have said something like,”success is making as much money as my dad.” Today’s answer was totally different. Being unemployed and barely scraping by for almost a year gives you lots of time to think about things like that.

Most people work 5 days a week to earn money so they can enjoy the other 2 days of the week- and they do that for 40+ years! That’s completely backwards. What is money for? It’s so you can buy things that make you happy and pay to do things you enjoy. How does it make sense to spend 70% of your days doing something just to facilitate your enjoyment of the other 30%? Life is waaaay too short for that.

For me and most people, money is an obstacle. It’s something that forces us to spend most of our time doing things we probably wouldn’t be doing if we had the choice. It’s one of the biggest sources of stress. It’s something that keeps us from getting out and doing the things that we enjoy the most.

Life was meant to be enjoyed. Financial success is the point where money stops being an obstacle and becomes just another tool to facilitate your enjoyment of life. I don’t care if you have 10 million dollars, a Ferrari, or a private jet. As long as your work dictates when you can enjoy life, you haven’t made it.

I haven’t made it yet, and in fact I’m flat broke. But I’m happy and living life, and I think that makes me a lot closer than a lot of people I know.
